Temperature: cold, heat and the gear that protects you
Three maps have a set temperature: the Burning Grove is hot, and both Grey Birch Mountain maps, 15:35 and 15:27, are cold. Your head, body, hands, legs and feet each have their own temperature and each can suffer separately.
The short version
- Burning Grove is 10 degrees. A body part reaches the first heat stage at 10, so it happens everywhere on the map. The second stage needs 15.
- Grey Birch Mountain 15:35 is -12 degrees. A body part reaches the first cold stage at -10. The second cold stage needs -15, which this map's air never reaches.
- Grey Birch Mountain 15:27 is -18 degrees. That is below the second cold stage, so both cold stages can apply there.
- Each body part moves toward the air temperature at 1 degree per second. Its Warm stat slows cooling and speeds up warming (table below).
- The PTN Heat Resistant Suit scales the air temperature to 60%. That keeps you under the first heat stage in the Burning Grove and above the first cold stage on Grey Birch Mountain 15:35. On 15:27 it still leaves the air at -10.8, past the first cold stage.
- Warm gear makes you overheat faster in the Burning Grove. Take it off there.
Where temperature matters
| Map | Air temperature | How you get there |
|---|---|---|
| [Origin-00] Bosque Ardiente | 10 | The mission Departamento de I+D (Canal Privado): Fluctuaciones Dimensionales gives the coordinates. |
| [Origin-12]Grey Birch Mountain 15:35 | -12 | The mission Travel Plans gives the coordinates. |
| [Origin-12]Grey Birch Mountain 15:27 | -18 | From 15:35, once you have finished the mission Flipping the Switch, through the teleport point at the foothills. |
Every other playable map has no set temperature, so heat and cold do not apply there. On Grey Birch Mountain 15:35, 44 small marked areas (campfires, oil drums, tents, rooms and the extraction point) have their own temperature, from -3 to 7. Inside one, that value replaces the mountain's -12. Twelve of them are at 5.
When each stage starts
The limits are the same for all five body parts. At the second stage you still have the first stage's effects.
| Stage | A body part reaches |
|---|---|
| Cold, first stage | -10 or lower |
| Cold, second stage | -15 or lower |
| Heat, first stage | 10 or higher |
| Heat, second stage | 15 or higher |
A body part moves toward the air temperature at 1 degree per second. Its Warm stat (Head Warm, Body Warm, Hand Warm, Leg Warm, Foot Warm, added up across worn gear) changes that speed:
| Situation | Speed | Example with Warm 9 |
|---|---|---|
| The part is getting colder | 1 degree per second divided by (1 + Warm) | 0.1 degrees per second. Going from 0 to -10 takes 100 seconds instead of 10. |
| The part is getting warmer | 1 degree per second times (1 + Warm) | 10 degrees per second. Going from 0 to 10 takes 1 second instead of 10. |
What each body part suffers
Cold
| Body part | First stage (-10) | Second stage (-15) |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Starting weapon spread +30%. | Vision -35%. |
| Body | Stamina recovery -25%. | Maximum stamina -30%. |
| Hands | Ranged reload time +20%, melee attack speed -10%, search speed -50%. | Search speed -50%, weapon switch time +50%. |
| Legs | Movement speed -10%, sprint stamina cost +20%, roll distance -15%. | Movement speed -15%, roll cooldown +1 second, 5% chance each second to be interrupted while sprinting. |
| Feet | Footsteps 10% louder. | Movement speed -20% and 1 damage per second while moving. |
Heat
| Body part | First stage (10) | Second stage (15) |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Starting weapon spread +30%. | Taking damage interrupts running. |
| Body | Stamina recovery -15%, stamina cost +10%. | Maximum stamina -30 points, and stamina recovers only while standing still. |
| Hands | Ranged reload time +10%, melee attack speed -10%, melee damage -15%. | Search speed -50%, weapon switch time +50%. |
| Legs | Movement speed -10%, sprint stamina cost +20%. | Movement speed -30%, and you cannot run or roll. |
| Feet | Stamina recovery -20% while moving. | 1 stamina per second lost while moving. |
Frostbite and Burning. If a body part stays in the second stage for 30 seconds, it adds one layer of Frostbite (cold) or Burning (heat). Each layer lowers your maximum health by 10% and deals 1 damage per second. Five body parts give at most five layers. A layer stays while its part is in the second stage and drops 60 seconds after it leaves.
Warm gear
198 pieces of gear carry a Warm value for one or more body parts. Each piece's page lists its Warm values under "While worn", and the Gear planner adds them up for an outfit. Values add up across everything you wear. Gear in the hotbar does not count. Most pieces give 1 to 3. These give the most:
Gear that sounds warm does not always have a Warm value. These have none: the Grey Ski Scarf, the Wool Overcoat from the mission Winter Equipment Distribution Notice, and the Black and White T-Shirts. Check the item page before you rely on a piece.
Loot pools that hold the fleece and padded pieces: winter clothes, thick clothes and fleece hat and coat set.
The PTN Heat Resistant Suit and heaters
- PTN Heat Resistant Suit. While worn, the temperature you feel is 60% of the air temperature, hot or cold. It is the only item with this effect. It has no Warm value, fills head, eye, face, body and leg slots, and lowers movement speed by 20%.
- Burning Grove with the suit. 10 becomes 6, below the first heat stage.
- Grey Birch Mountain 15:35 with the suit. -12 becomes -7.2, above the first cold stage. Inside a campfire area (5) you feel 3.
- Where to get it. Accepting the mission Departamento de Operaciones (Canal Privado): Investigación de Incendio gives you one. The Burning Grove also has a car that can hold one (loot list), and the URC equipment shop can stock it.
- Pocket Heater. This Corrupted-shirt trait adds +5 degrees (5.5 if the wearer has the Mystic talent) to the air temperature for everyone within 3 units of the wearer, including the wearer. Heaters stack. The suit's 60% applies after the heat is added. See Corrupted weapons and gear. In the Burning Grove one heater brings the air to 15, the second heat stage.
The Sun and the Moon on Grey Birch Mountain 15:35
A Sun and a Moon are placed near map position x 89, z -141. The game calls them the "Sun" and the "Moon".
- Sun damage. Inside an area 28 units wide and about 40 deep around the Sun, you take 10 to 100 damage every second, more the closer you are.
- Sun heat. Inside an area 40 units wide and about 57 deep, the air temperature rises by 10 at the edge to 50 at the centre.
- The Moon's shadow. The Moon circles the Sun and casts a wedge-shaped shadow on the side away from the Sun. Inside it you take no Sun damage and the Sun's heat is gone. The air temperature there is 0, not the mountain's -12.
- The suit does not help against Sun damage. It changes only the temperature you feel.
