Dangerous enemies: what to expect and how to counter them

Most enemies in the Forest Region and Burning Grove are weak alone and deadly in numbers or through their side effects. This guide profiles the threats worth planning for: how much health and protection they have, how each attack lands, what status effect it leaves you with, and which damage type gets through best.

The short version

  • Health is not the only danger. Bleeding, Toxic Gas, fire and fractures do much of the damage in a long fight.
  • Carry the cures. Bandages clear bleeding, an Antidote clears Toxic Gas, splints clear fractures, and painkillers clear Pain.
  • Roll out of fire. Each roll removes one stack of Burned.
  • Pick the damage type they resist least. The resistance table below shows it for every enemy, and Enemy damage types and resistances explained shows how it works.
  • Noise draws enemies. Enemies that are not already fighting you walk toward player-made sounds they can hear.

How to read the profiles

  • Damage is what one strike deals before your protection reduces it.
  • Wind-up is the delay before a strike lands, so it is the moment to move or roll.
  • Attack interval is how often the attack can be used.
  • Reach is how far the attack extends.
  • Speed uses the same scale as the player, whose base speed is 2.5.
  • Hearing threshold is explained under noise below. A lower number means the enemy notices quieter or more distant noise.

Status effects

EffectWhat it doesHow to deal with it
Burned5 damage each second for every stack, up to 5 stacksRoll. Each roll removes one stack.
Toxic Gas1 damage every 2 secondsAn 生物毒素抗毒藥 clears it.
Bleeding1 damage each second for every stack, up to 3 stacksA 繃帶, 止血帶 or 止血粉 clears it.
PainYour aim spreads wider止痛藥 clear it.
FracturedYour movement speed drops by 25%A 手工夾板 clears it.
MycomarkedYou are covered in fungal spores that give off an odour. It does no damage itself, but a 恐怖山民 on the map walks toward you while you carry it.No item removes it and it has no timer. It lasts until you leave the map.

Each attack lists its chance to cause an effect and how long it lasts. An attack with no chance listed always causes it. Damage from Burned, Toxic Gas and Bleeding is True damage, so armour does not reduce it. Your melee weapons can cause Bleeding and Fractured too; see melee light attacks, heavy attacks and status effects.

Health and protection at a glance

Protection is subtracted from each damage type before general Defence is applied. A value of 0 means no protection against that type. The last column is the type or types with the lowest protection.

Noise and hearing

An enemy that is not already fighting you walks to the spot of a sound you make when the sound's volume minus its distance in metres is at least the enemy's hearing threshold. Firing a weapon makes a sound equal to the weapon's volume, which is shown on its page.

  • An unsuppressed rifle with volume 20 is heard by a Fungal Stalker (threshold 1) from up to 19 m away.
  • The same shot is heard by a Puppet (threshold 15) only from within 5 m, and by an 縱火博士 or Samurai (threshold 20) only at the exact spot.
  • Suppressors lower a weapon's volume by 4 to 9, which shrinks the area in which every enemy notices it.

Human groups

Cookie Crumbs and Fallen Leaf fighters carry weapons from loadout lists, so what they hit you with varies from one fighter to the next. Each hit from a human is the weapon's normal damage multiplied by the percentage in the table, and every shot is thrown off by up to the aim spread in degrees. When they use a gun, they fire for a short burst and then pause, with each timing varied by up to 20% either way.

Randomly spawned Cookie Crumbs come in five tiers with different weapons and damage, and the random Fallen Leaf Agents only appear at a high enough danger level; danger level rises with every run you leave alive and falls with every death. All of them share the same protection: Impact 5, Puncture 20 and Slash 5. The two Cookie Crumbs bosses have 500 health, and the Fallen Leaf team members have 1,000. Browse the individual pages on the enemies list.

Before you go

  1. Pack bandages, an Antidote, splints and painkillers before entering either region.
  2. Expect tougher Cookie Crumbs and Fallen Leaf Agents after a streak of clean runs: danger level decides which of them can spawn.
  3. Choose weapons for the enemies you expect, using the resistance table.
  4. Keep your distance from Pyromads and Echostriders, which are fast, and kill them before they reach you.
  5. Watch for the wind-up of heavy attacks and roll as it ends.
  6. Use a suppressor when you want to avoid drawing nearby enemies.
